Baghdad buro

This item from the Baghdad buro seemed worth highlighting:

I have been honestly shocked at the number of people who have emailed to let me know that JJ Reddick has been arrested on the same charge. As I sat up on the roof last night watching a firefight between IPs and the Sadr Militia, I was glad to be informed of this important issue.

Sports is nice, but news pays the rent. Let's not get 'em mixed up when we're calculating that 1A mix, OK?

And let's not forget that the entertainment desk deserves the came copyediting care as the news desk.

Today's N&O movie review of an Australian film notes that a lawless character is to be hung.

If he's hung, he needs to be doing porn and not Down Under Westerns.

The verb for suspending by the neck until dead is "hanged."

I am loathe to blame the desk for this, though. It's my experience that at many papers the entertainment copy is shoveled onto the layout bypassing the desk, with only a cursory read.

It's a cliche that everyone is busy, but at least offer to read the local reviewers' copy. They usually appreciate the professionalism, and the entertainment desk can repay the favor handsomely since they get invites to all the good parties.

I'm loath to leave a comment on a blog post some nine months old, but I loathe seeing the word 'loathe' used when 'loath' is called for.
