The Official Dissertation Committee has had its way with the Official Dissertation and checked all the appropriate boxes anyway (short answers: Yes, there's an effect; yes, it works; no, I haven't figured out why government orientation and media orientation go in opposite directions despite the overlap, but I'm working on it). Pending a few revisions, the degree is complete.
Thus ends an interesting period in which on any given day, the mailbox at the Manor was likely to hold a solicitation from the AARP and a TO THE PARENTS OF! note from some bottom-feeding student loan provider. Everybody ought to try it sometime.
