Welcome to Tombstone

Back when "design" was called "layout" and editors were expected to know how a proportion wheel worked, one of the first rules you learned was about bumping heds, or "tombstoning." As in: Don't. Or if you do, maximize the contrast (size, shape, weight) between the heds so they don't read into each other.

Bump bans could get extreme. Nobody's going to have trouble distinguishing a 1/30/4 from the 5/42/1 next to it on an elbow page. But when you ignore the basics -- as the folks downtown apparently decided they could do today with impunity (that's the top of 4A) -- the results can be pretty grisly.

That looks for all the world to be a misguided and poorly executed attempt to show a lack of favoritism. Both above the fold, both with same size heads and same size stories. And it comes off amateurish because that's what it is..

Yah, I'm entirely at a loss to what they were thinking. It's hard to see why common sense didn't take over at some point. (Oh, wait...)

Somehow the Private Eye byline of "Lunchtime O'Booze" comes to mind . . .

OK, let's have some fun interpreting this. First, here's the headline:

"Barrow stumps at Bing rests case as 6 churches, rally he attends church."

Now, let's reconstruct what happened.

1. Bing was accused of habitually sleeping on the job.
2. This went to court and was known as the Bing rests case.
3. People came to the Bing rests case in fancy dress, among them Barrow.
4. Some people couldn't figure out what Barrow's costume was supposed to be. It stumped them.
5. In fact, Barrow was dressed as six churches.
6. Some might conclude from such a bad costume that Barrow has rarely seen a church let alone attended one.
7. This is not so, we are assured. Barrow does attend church. "Rally" is a typo for "really".

How many points do I get?

With the triple word score AND the duck coming down from the ceiling at the mention of 'dressed as six churches'? A LOT of points.
